Nonverbal communication is just as important in relationships, regardless of whether its intimate or platonic, as verbal communication. There are numerous nonverbal cues that people use with individuals, but these cues may have different meanings depending on the person it is being used on. For instance, an individual with an indifferent expression may cause others to assume that they are mean or in a poor mood, but to someone who knows that person, that indifferent look may mean nothing at all. I have been in a male-female platonic friendship with my friend Justin for about 12 years now. This friendship has been building since we were 5 yearsold, and after such a long friendship we have become part of each other’s family, we go on vacation together and he was in the hospital when my nephew was born. The way our relationship works is that he is my emotional rock and I make sure to keep him grounded. Throughout the years, I have learned what Justin’s nonverbal cues mean and he has learned what mine mean.
