TEST DATE: 2/13/08 JANUARY 16, 2008 The Science of Geography: Geography: from geo ‘earth’ and graphein ‘to write’ Geography is: a method, not a body of knowledge - holistic discipline, much broader range of knowledge - diverse field of study geographers use: -spatial analysis—interested in space and patterns, also interested in Earth systems Geographers study relationships among: natural systems (ie. precipitation patterns) geographic areas societies (different attitudes in climate change for different nations/regions) cultural activities -> *goes hand in hand with societies *interaction between all of these Physical Geography: Scientific Method: Process of: -observing -summarizing -hypothesizing -experimenting Used to develop theories and laws Earth Systems Concepts: Systems theory: A system is any ordered, interrelated set of things linked by flows of energy Systems may be OPEN or CLOSED - *earth is an OPEN system
