Brooke Green2-10-2014PortfolioMeet ZacharyPart One Assessments: Affective connections to readingZachary is a first grader at Birch Street Elementary. He lives just outside ofKalkaska with his mom, dad, two brothers, one sister and a dog named Gizmo. Zacharyis a slender kid, wears glasses and has sandy blonde hair that tends to be a bit on theshaggy side. Outside of school he mostly enjoys playing Xbox360 and eating pizza. Hehas never been involved in extracurricular activities, but said, “If I could play a sport itwould be football.” He has never traveled anywhere, only to Traverse City to see hisGrandma. When asked “well if you could pick somewhere to go, where would you wantto go?” he responded with “no where, I don’t even know where to go.” At home he hasseveral chores, but mostly just putting away his clothes and cleaning his room.At school Zachary enjoys playing Legos with his best friends and heroes Kaleband Logan. Zachary and Logan were both in my classroom last year and the two ofthem truly defined the meaning of best friends. Logan is also a struggling reader and thetwo of them are inseparable. Zachary says, “I am the best at reading, math and playinggames.” When asked what he would really like to get better at he said, “rememberingmy periods.”He enjoys books such as Sponge Bob and Freddie Fernorther. Although Ifound it interesting that in the beginning of the school year he turned in all of hishomework and now he doesn’t turn in any. He is also struggling with his behaviorsomewhat. His report card stated that he struggles to work without disturbing others andis not able to meet classroom expectations. When it comes to testing, Zachary has gonefrom being intensive to strategic on the Reading Curriculum Based Measurement (R-CBM) aimsweb test. Currently, he is performing at 63.4% accuracy. He has alsoimproved on the nonsense word fluency assessment (NWF) going from intensive thisfall to being on benchmark this winter. He has maintained benchmark on theassessment phoneme segmentation fluency (PSF) so far this year. He is struggling withcomprehension according to his report card. He was performing at grade level the firstquarter of school and now he is struggling to produce grade-level work when it comes to
comprehending what he reads. It seems that based on his fluency scores that hisfluency is improving but he does not understand what he is reading. It seems like he could be giving up and being the class clown is a good cover upwhen things get tough. It doesn’t seem like he has much encouragement at home or theextra support to help him practice the skills he is learning outside of school. I lookforward to working with him more and finding out what really motivates him. I thinkpraising him and acknowledging his improvements is a great starting point.
