Final Review Essay 1 Historians have continuously debated the nature of the institution of slavery. Discuss the two major interpretations discussed in class and contrast them with a description of the “Peculiar Institutions” in the 19 th century. The latter part should include the organization and operation of the institution and its impact on the slave population. Two Interpretations: Philips Interpretation: (starts 1890 and doesn’t end until WWII) Wrote American Negro Slavery He said that slaves came from a dark continent so they are blessed to be in America as a slave instead of on the African Continent. He said that slavery would teach blacks how to live. He also believed that slavery is not a profitable institution. Stanley Elkins: said slaves were brainwashed to be "happy". (traumatic stress sydrome) Kenneth Stampp’s Interpretation: Wrote Peculiar Institution He contradicts what Philips says in his book. He says that slavery is brutal and demonizing.
