One of the triggers of the  mexican american war , was that texas wanted to join the  united states. texas was delayed to become a state because texas would unbalance the  # of slave states. But when California comes in as non-slave state, texas becomes a  state. California(free-state) and Texas(slave-state) balance each other out. as part of the  compromise  of 1850 you have the  fugitive   slave   law Fugitive slave law - (part of the compromise of 1850) 1) slaves captures, bounty hunters can go into the north to retrieve an escaped slave.  Usually once a slavery crossed the border into the north, the slave would be free, but  now with this law, slaves captures can go to the north and grab anyone and say they are  a slave of the south, 2) northerner have to assist the slave captures if they ask them for their help. and it is a  crime to provide assist to escaped slaves.
