Employees need to be – recruited, selected, trained, managed and compensated. HR 7 Main Internal Activities : (figure 1.1 pg 2) Employee and Labour Relations -employee rights and privacy -HR policies-Union/Management relations Health, Safety and Security -health and wellness-safety -security (follow the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970) can use Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) when employee has issues like substance abuse Compensation and Benefits -wage/salary admin-Incentives -benefits HR development -orientation-training-employee development-Career planning within firm -Performance management Staffing -job analysis (lays foundation)-recruiting (use job descriptions and job specifications)-selection Equal Employment Opportunity -compliance -diversity (getting more, so harder) -affirmative action Strategic HR Management -HR planning -HR measurement -HR technology Strategic HR management: HR management is essential for companies if they want to maintain competitiveness HR effectiveness must be increased thru the use of HR metrics and HR Technology. Many organizations have HR management systems (HRMSs) Human Capital : what the people bring and contribute to organizational success The collective value of the capabilities, knowledge, skills, life experiences, and motivation of an organizational workforce. (sometimes referred to as intellectual capital) HR contributes to the Core Competency of a firm a unique capability that creates high value and differentiates an organization from its competition. HR Challenges External Environment that significantly affect HR activities: Global (issues with outsourcing) Environmental Cultural/Geographic Political Social Legal Economic Technological Globalization of business US jobs have been transferred to foreign locations—saves on labour cost Economical and Technological Changes Articles: 1) Why We Hate HR? HR people are, for most practical purposes, neither strategic nor leaders – employees often feel few opportunities for advancement, and don’t feel ike their companies took interest in their wellbeing. HR people aren’t the sharpest tacks in the box HR pursues efficiency in lieu of value HR doesn’t work for the employee – their to document everything to protect the firm.
