Alder is a motivational author that has written over 1,050 inspirational quotes, including her most famous: “Your perspective on life comes from the cage you were held captive in.” This can be interpreted as: individuals have different views towards the world based on their past experiences and background.In the novel,Cry, the Beloved Country,the readers follow the journey of Stephen Kumalo, a priest who goes on a remarkable journey in the crime- filled city of Johannesburg, to find his younger sister, Gertrude and his son, Absalom. However, things take a sharp turn once Kumalo discovers his sister turned into a prostitute, and his son has killed a white man. Not just any white man, but Arthur Jarvis, a rich, well-liked individual who was actively involved in advocating natives’ rights. Shannon Alder’s quote disagrees with the viewpoints from the novel, because of the author’s description of Arthur, Gertrude, and Absalom, and their experiences in South Africa. Arthur Jarvis contradicts Alder’s idea of being a product of his own environment by defying the “Christian way” and advocating natives’ rights. The audience gets a glimpse of Arthur’s privileged childhood when his father, James Jarvis, read aloud his article entitled “Private Essay on the Evolution of a South African.” Within the article, Arthur wrote “One can ride, as I rode when I was a boy, over green hills and into great valleys… One can read, as I read when I was a boy,the brochures about lovely South Africa, that land of the sun and beauty sheltered from the storms of the world and feel pride in it and love for it, and yet know nothing at
