PLAN SUPPORT2The social-cultural perspective is useful as an approach to the problem of suicide byLGBT youth.Studies show that where there are a higher percentage of gay and lesbian couplesand when LGBT students attended schools with gay-straight alliances and anti-discriminationpolicies, they were less likely to attempt suicide than LGBT teens living in less tolerantcommunities. As quoted by researcher Mark Hatzenbuehler, "That challenges the myth thatthere's something inherent to being gay that puts (LGB teens) at risk for suicide attempts" #cite.Another study shows that the harassment of young people for their sexual orientation will leavethem more likely to contemplate suicide. Therefore, making changes in the social-culturalperspective of the young LGBT community can have a positive effect on reducing the risk ofsuicide.
