1. Visions of Death – the underworld - M&L pp. 349-376 Odysseus goes to the Underworld where he must consult the seer Tiresias about how to reach Ithaca and return home. Came to the Underworld b going to the farthest edge of the sea, covered in cloud and mist and it takes a sacrifice and spilling the blood of the sacrifice into a pit. Also have to give gift to dead, first honey and milk, and then wine, and then water. – all of this is because the dead really want to be alive again. Goes into underworld, but first comes across an old comrade who had died, Elpenor. (he had gotten drunk at Circe’s palace where they had left him and when he was going down the ladder he fell and broke his neck.) He asks Odysseus to go back and get his body and give him a proper burial – shows importance of being buried and importance of death. Next Odysseus saw soul of his dead mother. Then saw Tiresias. Tiresias drank the blood that Odysseus had sacrificed so that he could “speak the truth.” Tiresias tells Odysseus what destiny has in store for him. Next Odysseus meets Agamemnon, then Achilles, and Ajax. Achilles speaks to him and shows him his despair… he tells him he would trade all of his glory to be alive again – and that even though he is brave and a sort of god among the underworld he would still trade it to be a slave for a day if he could just be alive again. Next sees Minos with a golden sceptor pronouncing judgements. Sees people being punished for falling in ill faith with the gods. In this case… all mortals end up in Underworld together, regardless of how they lived their life. Exception is a special hell for sinners who REALLY anger the gods. Aeneas has to visit his father in the Underworld – has to take a golden bough to Persephone and has to bury his comrade Misenus. Goes to underworld… great black lake. Sees how those who are not properly buried are not allowed to cross the lake. In the entrance there sat some things (Old Age, Disease… things personified) and Sleep – who is said to be the brother of death. Sees a bunch of horrible monsters and makes his way to one of the rivers of Tartarus. Here a ferryman guards the waters – old, white beard… Charon. Charon cannot take men and women across the river who have not been properly buried. Aeneas sees an old comrade who had died and had not received a proper burial – reminiscent of Odysseus. He comes across a queen who had committed suicide because of her love for Aeneas and his betrayal. Also comes across Trojan heroes and talks to them. Sees “hell” – river of Tartarus is on fire – sybil tells him of the horrible punishments they all face. Next comes across a happy field where the good go – singing and dancing… fields of Elysium. Based more on the deeds people did while they were alive than if they pleased the gods or not.
