Key Functional Areas of Nursing InformaticsCheeseman (2011) defines nursing informatics as a “specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice” (p.264). In 2015,the American Nursing Association(ANA) developed Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practiceas an outline to explain the specialty practice and accountability of informatics nurses (IN) and informatics nurse specialists. Each standard developed by the ANA provides an evaluation of nursing practice and outcomes. The specific competencies for each standard serve as evidence of compliance of thatspecific standard. The areas of nursing informatics (NI) that are most relevant to my current position as a Quality Improvement Nurse are educational and professional development, as wellas process and workflow design. Quality Improvement is a very important area of the hospital as health care professional are able to review charts and abstract to ensure proper policy and care has been provided. Much ofmy job is reviewing high level of care transfers (to either Progressive Care or the Intensive Care Unit), mortality reviews, Medicare Abstraction of core measures, as well as reviewing charts given by other healthcare professionals when they felt the proper treatment may not have beengiven. This gives me the opportunity to find numerous areas of improvement. I bring these areas of improvement to the education department where together we create power points, computer based learning modules, and other in-services. Because of informatics and my job, I am able to make a difference in our hospital by finding areas of improvement and creating solutions to help with knowledge deficient with education.
