Kines. 350 Study Guide Test 1 Chapter 1: Slow Twitch Fibers – Take 110ms to reach peak tension when stimulated. Fast Twitch Fibers – Can reach peak tension in about 50ms. 2 Major Types of Type 2 Fibers – Type 11a and IIx. -Type IIa are most frequently recuited. Myosin ATPase is the enzyme that splits ATP to release energy to drive contraction. Type 1 fibers have a slow form of myosin, type 2 fibers have a fast form. Neural Stimulation causes ATP to split rapidly in Type 2 fibers than in type 1 fibers, so therefore cross- bridges cycle more rapidly in Type 2 Fibers. Type 2: Deliver calcium better into muscle cells when stimulated. This contributes to the faster contraction in Type 2 fibers. On avg. Type 2 contract 5-6times faster than Type 1. The alpha motor unit appears to determine whether the fibers are type I or II. Type 1: Generally Smaller Innervated < or = 300 muscle fibers. Have high level of aerobic endurance. Efficient at ATP from the oxidation of carbs and fats.
