Med Soc Chapter 3 Book Notes 10/6/07 Larger number of old ppl than ever will put strain on health care sys Strain on SS also. Less taxpayers per retiree Old require greater share of pub services. Old now cared for by society, no longer family Health is #1 thing 4 old ppl. Life and happiness based around it for them Old ppl rate their health positively, despite its decline w/ age Feel healthy cuz survived to old age and cuz can do daily activities Biggest prob for ppl over 65 is arthritis Social gerontology – study ways old adjust to society and vice versa Gender Be4 men and women live equal. Now women live longer Women suffer more illnesses than men, but they usu less severe Man weaker than women – even as babies Man tend to get into more accidents + resulting deaths (aggressive) Men have job stress and drink more, higher BP Women have more acute illnesses, sickness, morbidity Males have more accidents Women use health services more than men Women have more choronic conditions that don’t kill. Men have more chronic that do kill Women spend more time taking care of themselves Women sick more than men. But maybe be a psycho thing for them Women more anxiety and depression Women and men roles in life are changing so can change life exprectancies
