Chapter 5 Med Soc Illness Behavior – activity undertaken by person who is ill and wants to define/fix it Health behavior – “”maintain/improve health, prevent probs, improve body image. Includes sick ppl too. Health Lifestyles Health lifestyle – patterns of health-related behavior based on choices from options avail to ppl according to life chances. Life chances determined by class position that either enables or constrains healthy lifestyle choices Choices – go to doc, exercise, brush teeth, wear seatbelt… Health improved w/ “engineering methods” – build safe water supplies, production of cheap food for urban areas thru mechanized agriculture 1900-1950 – medical era – mass vaccination, antibiotics to combat infection postmedical era – now controlled by SES public realize that we going away from acute to chronic illnesses, that probs caused by lifestyle (AIDS), and mass media saying lifestyle change improve health Weber:Lifestyles Social rank determined by how much of society’s good and services person can buy, status (prestige), power (polit influence) Point diff btw class (above) and status (occupation, income, level of edu)
