Playing With the Houston Youth SymphonyWhile I lived back in Houston, TX I began my journey of my music endeavors. I started out playing the clarinet in middle school and then picked up the flute later. In High school I stopped playing the clarinet and focused more on the flute and piccolo. In high school I did a number of things that helped me get to were I am today. I played with the all city/state and regionband, all city/state and region orchestra, solo and ensemble, and the Houston Youth Symphony, AKA H.Y.S. I feel that the HYS had the most impact over my life and feel I should focus on that particular group. In my sociology class we’ve learned that there’re many ways to categorize people and the easiest way is to just simply put them in groups. Reference groups are used in order to evaluate and determine the nature of a given individual or other group's characteristics and sociological attributes [Mer17]. The youth orchestra very big in upholding the standers of being punctual, coming prepare, and always be professional. I will now share in detail how the HYS socialized me with these three standers and the process I went through that has a hold on me till this day. The Houston Youth Symphony always told us about being on time and how bad it looked when you’re not and how it can affect the rehearsal. I knew this was very important but I had the unfortunate circumstance that caused me to be late once and I had a big talking to by my conductor. As we all know how big Chicago is, well Houston is demographically larger than Chicago and it doesn’t help that we do not have a good as the public transportation is here. I lived on one side of town and where the HYS rehearsed at was on the other side of town that I
was not familiar with at all. At the time I was not driving and either took the bus or my dad dropped and picked me up. Starting off I was always on time and was in good standing but once my dad told me he wasn’t going to be able to take me anymore I had to start catching the bus to the rehearsal. Just so you can know how far this was from me I had to take two buses and then walk the rest of the way there. Well after my dad told me I was to find my own way to the rehearsal I had to also find out what busses I had to take and how long it was going to take me to get there. So once I found out what busses I had to take and how long it was going to take me to get there I made my way to the school. It took me roughly 2hrs to get the school and I thought I left in an appropriate time to get there on time.1I still was late because I had to walk the rest of the way and by me being 1stflute in the first concert I had all the solos and I was missing and thatdisrupted the rehearsal. The conductor pull me to the side during our break and told me how
