Psychology Lec 14 10/26/07 ch.6 procrastinate for emotional not rational reason Tierney of the known – what we think we know prevents us from learning new material. Schemas help us cuz put info into existing knowledge structure. But what if need to put in a new knowledge structure. Or what if your previous knowledge was wrong. Ppl block out info that conflicts w/ existing schema. This is the Tierney of the known. Makes difficult to edu ppl. Ppl’s memory accuracy can be wrong even if think its right. This is because you take in info consistent w/ your schema. Mothers remember infancy as being better than it was. They also remember that they did as the experts said, even though they didn’t. We all misremember. Misremember in the direction of making themselves look better. Why? Because deep down ppl no feel good about themselves, so try and remember being better than you really are. p. 224 sexual abuse REPRESSION IS A FACT. Supported by a vast number of clinical observations.
