Psych lec 15 Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Calof: 3 misconecptions bout memory about abusive situations 1) ppl cant forget 2) therapists pressure clients to conclude that they were abused 3) recovering traumatic memory cures the patient not essential for a person to remember an event failures of love in our childhood affect our ability to love in the future. Harder for us to trust, love… how we remember things is related to how we relate to other ppl. Loftus – you can fool ppl to believe something which didn’t happen. False memory. Same as when therapist convinces ppl that they were sex abused. This is “scientific evidence” that’s most often used. 15% are fooled. PROBLEMS: 1) lying to ppl w/o giving them reason to think that youre lying no external validity! Cant relate to the therapist setting an experience is traumatic because all of the control is taken away from them to keep the illusion of control ppl beat themselves up over what could/should have done…leads to depression and low self-esteem
