The Maya empire was already in a state of decline by the time Europeans arrived in the New World. All three of these cultures contained stratified societies with nobilities specialized in warfare at the top. The Aztec and Inca refer to the name of the empires and not strictly speaking the people. The people belonging to the Aztec for example were called the Mexica, which is were Mexico would later derive its name. The Inca Empire’s capital city is Cuzco, while the Aztec Empire’s capital is Tenochtitlan. 28
