Andy Gawne Phys-0133-51 Problem 32.45 Problem: a) What is the magnetic field strength 2 m from a long, straight wire carrying a current of 10 A? b) What percentage of the earth's magnetic field is your answer to (a)? c) High-voltage transmission lines, on tall towers, typically carry 200 A at voltages of up to 500,000 V. Although this is much larger than household currents, the lines are roughly 20 m overhead. Estimate the magnetic field strength on the ground underneath such lines. d) A common electrical appliance is an electric blanket. Some consumer groups urge pregnant women not to use electric blankets, just in case there is a health risk. The current through the heater wires is approximately 1 A. Estimate, stating any assumptions you make, the magnetic field strength a fetus might experience. How does this compare to your answer in part (a)?
