Tristin Pierson SOC 100 11/23/2016 The Persuaders : A True Depiction of the Influence of Media Today Sociology, simply stated, is the study of human society. Society is a large collection of people, their beliefs, and the regulations that guide them through life. A large influence on this overall journey in becoming an active member of society is the media. In today’s world, the media is in almost every aspect of life. From reading the newspaper, to watching a favorite show, to scrolling through cellphone applications—media is ever present. In this technologically advanced world, it often goes unnoticed just how much of an effect the media plays on the day-to-day life of an average US citizen. A large part of sociology is dedicated to finding the answer to questions posed similar to the statement above. One such look into the amount of effort put into reaching the everyday citizens is the documentary, The Persuaders . This hour long film, originally published in November 2004 by Frontline, gives a behind the scenes look on making an advertisement successful to the public. While it may seem as a means of insight into the minds of billion-dollar companies, the film depicts the startling effects media has on society as a whole. The Persuaders accurately depicts the assumption that America is a consumer culture, where citizens feel it is their duty to be good shoppers (Conley 108). This consumer culture is based solely on a capitalistic economy—one in which obtaining money seems to be the end goal. This gain in money is not made by the average citizen but rather made by the companies promoting their products.
