Orgs Notes Increasinig today, people are working together past 60-70 years o Supernationalist organizations Super Across Nationalist Nations o Sovereign states working together Money or culture or culture commonality Mission binds them together Achieve better as a group as oppsed to alone EU, AU, UN, NATO, NAFTA, APEC, OPEC Clubs getting bigger and bigger and more and more These groups effect the world more than individual states State conflict is still around though Nature of conflict has changed a lot Why is this happening now? o More supernationalist groups now than ever and more are being created Trend of our time o These organizations will soon supersede the sov states within 100 years They are doing everything together o Last 60-70 years End of WW2 1945 Start of supernationlist group Constant fighting all the time 20 th century change of scale because of all the dead people Bloodiest century in history Technology has increased so people killed easily Nagasaki 100k people dead from 1 person in 1 plane 1919 League of Nations formed US said who cares Not everyone bought into it WW2 came around and people started to get serious 1945 United Nations formed Have states to create peace and avoid future conflicts Why is it important to recognize that the rise of supranationlist organizations started during ww2? o Who fought and won and lost ww2 The western powers Europeans and Americans o Were in charge of the world at the time Their peak in economic and political powers
Europeans were the richest When the western powers the UN and NATO Position of leadership Western powers therefore dominated the leadership of the major supranationlist organizations o 1945 China a non power o India was a colony of Britain o Africa was colonized o Middle east was chaotic and weak o Western has all the power because of this Changing rapidly today New non-western organizations being formed o SCO Shanghai Cooperation Organization o Exisiting institutions are restructuring leadership o UN o IMF What does a state do to join? o Pay dues In terms of giving up sovereign power Play by rules of the club Giving up a bit control Not all states think the price is worth it Benefits have to outweigh the dues o Vatican city said they don’t wanna join o Switz didn’t join EU Most of US doesn’t like the UN o Reasons for supranationalist organizations 1. Money and economics Trade Everyone is gonna make more money Most important reason why people join 2. Safety and defense Agree to protect one another 3. Cultural common Same types of people and believe in same things o Work together for common culture Arab League Odd Balls Clubs that aren’t legit No written set of rules No structure so states don’t have to give up sov o G-7 o Nuke club o BRIC
