Carissa Sims Encounters Between Fr and US The American Enemy I really liked this text because if was so amusing. The reasons given for why America is bad and not as great as Europe are quite comical. The argument was more directed towards the New World, the entire western hemisphere. I thought it was so funny that the arguments started out scientifically-based, “validation in the natural sciences”. The lower crop production can be attributed to the fact that the colonists did not understand the climate and soil differences and therefore did not know how to work with the New World. The zoology arguments were really interesting. Buffon did a really horrible job group the animals together. Carl Linnaeus had already done much work with taxonomy and grouping organisms by the mid 18 th century. The tapir, elephant, rhino, and hippo are vaguely similar, but not enough so that Buffon’s argument can be made. And then Thomas Jefferson comes along and totally blows this zoology argument out the door
