Research Paper William Sessi Saint Leo University Academic Writing II ENG-122-OL01 Module 7 Nathaniel Hawthorne is the only child of a sea captain who died when Hawthorne was only four years old. He grew up in a coastal city called Selma in Massachusetts. Hawthorne developed a passion for reading when he injured his leg and was bedridden for a year. He later went to Bowdoin College. He worked as an editor after college and wrote short stories. In 1837, he published a collection, Twice-Told Tales which included “Young Goodman Brown”. He later joined Th Transcendentalist Utopian Community at Brook Farm in 1841. He left the group in 1842 and got married to Sophia Peabody. Together with his wife, he moved back to Salem. He then wrote The Scarlet letter, The House of the Seven Gables(which is often considered his greatest book), The Blithedale Romancewhich was written in the first person and The Marble Faun. He died in 1864. In “Young Goodman Brown,” Hawthorne used a great deal of mystery and suspense that makes the reader want to continue reading to the end. Hawthorne also uses other forms of symbolism to describe events and the nature of characters in the book. Hawthorne also illustrated how important faith and prejudice can influence an individual’s personality. Goodman Brown started his journey into the forest with an uncompromised faith. A strong Faith he had in the people that mattered most to him. The author created a strong disparity between the names of the newlyweds and their frightening setting.
