Chemistry – is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes Look at the macroscopic world – the things we can see, touch, and measure directly – and visualize the particles and events of the microscopic world.
The Semester • Atomic structure • the components of atoms, how they are put together, and how the structure influences the property of an atom • Molecular structure • bonding (how atoms form compounds), and how the structure of molecules influence their behavior • Chemical reactions (chemical changes) • How molecules change during a chemical reaction. Different types of reactions.
The Semester • Energy • How energy is consumed or created in chemical reactions and physical changes • Gases (physical changes) • how groups of atoms or molecules behave under conditions of different phases of matter – specifically the gas phase
