PSYC 314 - Notes Prediction – revelant data, to the degree that the behavior in question is well studied Theory – a general statement about relations between 2 or more variables empirically grounded (readily observable events) testable Theory vs. Law laws – comprehensive fundamental statements about reality theories – have boundary conditions (don’t apply to some circumstances) Good Theory states specific relations between specific variables ** 2 or more correct theories may cancel one another out. Equifinality – same behavior produced by many different causes (behavior has multiple determinants) Hypothesis – predictions about specific events that are derived from 1 or more theories Empiricism – base knowledge on observations (BACON)
