1406 – Majors Biology I Exam 3 Review: Chapter 8 Chapter 8 Be able to differentiate between metabolism, metabolic pathway, catabolic pathway and anabolic pathway. - Metabolism: total chemical reactions; emergent property of life that arises from orderly interactions between molecules. - Metabolic pathways: The road map of a cells metabolism. Each step is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. a. Catabolic: Breaking down complex molecules into simpler compounds to release energy. “Breakdown pathways” i. Cellular respiration: Sugar glucose and other organic fuels are broken down in the presence of oxygen to carbon dioxide and water. ii. Pathways can have more than one starting molecule and or product. b. Anabolic: Consume energy to build complex molecules from simpler ones; “biosynthetic pathways” What is bioenergetics? - Bioenergetics: The study of how energy flows through living organisms. Be able to define “energy” and the different types of energy. - Energy: Capacity to cause change. a. Kinetic: Energy associated with relative motion. i. Thermal: Associated with random movement of atoms or molecules 1. Thermal energy transferred from one object to another: heat b. Potential: Energy that is not kinetic. Energy that matter possesses because of its location or structure. i. Chemical: Potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction. What is thermodynamics and what types of systems can there be in thermodynamics? - Thermodynamics: The study of energy transformations that occur in a collection of matter. a. Isolated system: Unable to exchange energy or matter with surroundings (i.e. thermos) b. Open system: Energy and matter can be transferred between the system and its surroundings.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
