Memo 4: the Column of Trajan The Column depicts two of Trajan’s military campaigns against the Dacians, people from central Europe in present day Romania. Both of his campaigns were successful, and the tales of them are featured prominently in Trajan’s Forum, north of the Roman Forum. Constructed by order of the Roman Senate, it contains what is called a bas relief spiral, which tells the tale of the Dacian Wars. The Dacian wars were just as much about expansion as they were about conquest, as shown by the column, which illustrates little of actual battles and more images of things such as soldiers building forts, as opposed to actual scenes of battles. However, scenes of battles are present, such as the burning of Dacian buildings. But the focus of the column is to primarily highlight the non-violent acts of conquest and expansion to the public. This represents the importance of the campaigns being incorporated the Dacian region into the Roman Empire. It also shows how military campaigns were characterized in art. In this case, this column
