2 Primary production forms the base of all marine food webs so understanding variability of primary production in the ocean allows for a better understanding of the variability of all marine organisms Global ocean primary production is an important component of the global carbon cycle. It is, therefore, an essential element to our understanding and prediction of global climate and climate change Magnitude of CO 2 flux between Land and Ocean Reservoirs Some Definitions… Photosynthesis refers to the chemical reaction that uses water and carbon dioxide (gas) and the energy of sun light to form glucose molecules that contain high-energy chemical bonds and oxygen (gas) . Glucose then serves as the energy source for all subsequent biochemical reactions. The overall photosynthetic reaction is given by: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Light Energy ! C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Primary Production refers to the formation of organic material through the process of photosynthesis and the subsequent synthesis of complex organic molecules (e.g., DNA and protein).
