Discussion 4 – RSCH 202 3a. Which factors affect the internal validity of Xavier’s study given the experimental design he is using? Explain. There are seven possible effects that could pose a threat to both the internal and external validity of any study. The effects are history, maturation, testing, selection bias, mortality, statistical regression and instrumentation. The internal validity is highest when a study risks minimal threat from these seven effects, and that is the goal. In Xavier’s experimental design there is a threat of maturation effects to the internal validity. If, say, a participant is hungry during the study, that could decrease validity. Or, if a participant strongly dislikes athletic activities, they may not notice things such as sneakers as readily as a gym nut. Also, there is a risk or participants getting bored or tired, and missing the product placement scene altogether. Mortality could affect the study if Xavier plans one of the
