Sheridan 1 Autumn Sheridan Jeff Jones HIS-131-401 13 November 2016 The Compromise of 1877 The Compromise of 1877 was the agreement during the 1876 election that promised Hayes the presidency and also promised America the end of Reconstruction. The election of 1876 was a rough election that resulted in 11 deaths and some pretty devastated Northern Democrats. The compromise benefitted the Republicans, Democrats, and America, to an extent. On the other hand, the compromise exacerbated treatment of blacks. The Compromise of 1877 had a wide range of effects on the United States, but the negative ended up outweighing the positive. The 1876 election began with Samuel Tilden as the Democratic candidate and Rutherford Hayes as the Republican candidate. With racial controversy still going strong, the election comprised intimidation and violence towards blacks. Tilden held the lead on Election Day going into the next day. However, Southerners were not going to put up with losing. Accusations were
