Hesiod- 8/7 th century BC – before Homer Theogony - hexameter verse -deals with origin of the world, gods and “establishment of the current order” Enuma Elish -Ancient poem from Babylon Apsu & Tiamat: male and female water which mingle Theogony begins with an invocation of the Muses (lines 1-115) -# of Muses varies, but standard is 9 Lines 116-122 The first created beings: Chaos (Chasm), Gaia (Earth), Tartaros (Tartarus), Eroes (Love) 123-153 Second generation- children of Chaos and Gaia **Gaia gives birth to Kronos and other Titans with her son Uranos (Sky)** 154-210 First succession myth; Kronos cuts off the genitals of Uranos Aphrodite born from genitals; Furies from drops of blood 211-336 Second and third generation – children and grandchildren of Nyx and Pontos 337-885 Grandchildren of Titans; Succession of Olympians Line of Kronos and Rhea 453-506 Birth of Olympians; Succession of Olympians- Zeus rules as supreme god Kronos swallows kids as they are born. Tricked by Zeus and Rhea. Zeus hidden in Crete, Kronos eats a rock instead. Regurgitates stone & other children.
