Celine Cottenoir Lin PHYS 1305.01 February 28 th 2017 Magnetic Levitation The use of magnetic levitation has allowed for many futuristic technological achievements. In an article published by Popular Mechanics , both futuristic and present day Advancements include a high-speed rail, efficient wind power and even flying cars! For some background, magnetic levitation functions by the opposite attraction of SS or NN magnets. Energy in the form of friction from this reaction can create motion. One of the most relevant ways that magnetic levitation can be used is through that of a high-speed railway. The magnets attached to the side of the railway, and attached to the side of the train itself cause the train to accelerate. According to the article “8 Ways Magnetic Levitation Could Shape the Future”, other high-speed rails reach speeds of 180mph, while the one running on magnetic levitation can reach speeds of 300mph. These rails are not only fast, but efficient. Passengers aboard may have to only pay about 5 cents for a ride.
