One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. What behaviors would someone with strong self-awareness demonstrate within the context of leading and managing groups? Provide an example. Huber (2014) discusses personal leadership skills that are important for all great leaders to possess including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Self- awareness is defined as the “Ability to read one's own emotional state and be aware of one's own mood and how this affects staff relationships” (Huber, 2014, p. 4). A nurse’s perspective of self-awareness can be affected by their nursing experience. A newer nurse has less experience and in turn their self- awareness will not be as developed as a nurse that has 20 years of experience. Confidence in stressful situations (such as running a code) is a behavioral trait a nurse with strong self-awareness would portray.
