2 Running Head: LOCAL POLICE RESPONSE TO TERRORISM Abstract One of the most dangerous crimes that the governments around the world want to control is the terrorist attack. In the past decades, the terrorism has been one of the effective tactics by the terrorists to attack the government and to form a great conflict. Who will never know the 9/11 terrorist attack? I think all of us know how severe and tragic the effects of this attacks were and it is considered one of the most popular terrorist attack in the entire world as well as in our history. However, in this paper, we will focus on how do local police responses when unexpected terrorist attacks occurred, what are the things they do in preparing for an incident, and how do they handle the effects of a terrorist attack. Introduction The local police officers are the ones who are responsible for supporting and safeguarding the community against terrorism attacks and other types of crimes. According to the Criminal Justice USA, to become a police officer, a person must know first the primary duties of a responsible police officer or law enforcement officer. First, police officers should focus on how they can protect the people and property in a community under their jurisdiction. Aside from that, they must know how to respond effectively to issue citations, enforce laws, make arrests, and how to testify in court cases, (Criminal Justice USA). Furthermore, the most common duties of a local police officer are responding to domestic disturbances, providing first aid when there is someone who is involved in an accident or when there are injured individuals, and making traffic stops. Without the services of the local police, our community will become messy, it will be filled with violence’s and crimes, and our lives will be in danger at all times. However, let us focus on how do local police response when there are terrorism threats and how do they respond when a terrorist attack has occurred.
3 Running Head: LOCAL POLICE RESPONSE TO TERRORISM Body of the Paper On September 11, 2001, a normal day in the New York City was replaced by a severe and a tragic day. By 8:45 a.m. an American Airlines Boeing 767 hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. The 80 th floor of the tower was burned and instantly killed hundreds of people and also left hundreds of people trapped in higher floors. But this tragic event does not end here, after 18 minutes, another plane which is the United Airlines Flight 175 sliced the south tower of the World Trade Center hitting the 74 th to 84 th floor. After several minutes, the south tower began to collapse and followed by the collapsing of the north tower which created massive of dust and smoke in the city. According to the (History.com), this tragic event “was the deadliest day in the history of the New York City.” There are 3,000 people died including 23 New York police
