Habit - The term used to describe general shape of a crystal is habit. Cleavage – mineral’s tendency to split along certain preferred directions. Mineral tends to break along certain planes because the bonding between atoms is weaker there. form refers to a face or set of faces that have the same arrangement of atoms. PLEOCHROISM is a change in color that occurs when an anisotropic colored mineral is rotated. Pleochroic minerals can exhibit either two or three pleochroic colors. The extremes of color occur when crystals are oriented up-down and side-to-side in the field of view of the polarized light microscope. The color is a constant and predictable component of the mineral. 2.1 Colour and Pleochroism We've already observed that augite can appear slightly pink in plane polarised light (PPL) - this is the result of selective absorption of certain of the wavelengths that comprise the white light supplied by the illumination. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
