Without effective leaders, a company will not be able to use effectively the other three management strategies. According to Joe Porac, “To be effective, organizations must be able to compete in complex and volatile business environments, and managers must be able to manage within complex and dynamic workplaces. (¶ 1).” An effective leader guides, gives direction, and inspires others to do his/her best. An effective manager leads, guides, gives direction, inspires others to do his/her best while working towards the goals the leader has set. In the case of my former company, I often received the impression that no one was leading. I remember one summer the company had us doing team- building exercises at our annual conference and did a presentation on w.h.a.l.e.s. I remember many of the upper management people cheating to their team could win. No follow through was
