Global warming/climate change Could be called a ‘bug’ of our current energy and transportation systems. We will assume the science supporting it is sound: It’s simple and uncontroversial. Its predictions repeatedly confirmed. Involves both chronic and acute risks. Chronic : changing weather patterns, drought, rising sea levels, ecosystem destabilization and its consequences (species extinction, predators loss, disease). Acute : increased hurricanes, flood damage, heat waves, mass migration, economic hardship.

Why discuss climate change/global warming? This problem highlights many questions relevant to the theme of our class: 1. The social question : Are social problems and technological/environmental problems linked such that solutions to one are also solutions to the other? 1. The progress question : Is there a coincidence between a technologically simpler way of life and the best sort of life for us as humans? 1. The moral question : Do our moral ideals call for limiting our use of any technologies? 1. The well-being question : What are our ideals of the good life? How important are creative activity, pleasure, freedom to do what we want? How important are community and self-development? How important are external goods?

In Sale’s opinion… Neo- Luddite Solutions to social problems are also solutions to technological, environmental problems. Unemployment and robot technology. There is a coincidence between technologically simpler ways of life and the best life for us. Community and transportation. Morality demands limiting use of technology to that of promoting “beauty, stability, integrity, of land.” Elements of the good life: community, peaceful coexistence with nature.

In Kelly’s opinion… Technologies solve social problems. Robot technology and inhumane labor. Technological sophistication , not simplification, makes life better.
