be found. This is the tale that provided Shindo the inspiratio and story for his film Onibaba. A Mask with Flesh Scared a Wife lived in the nearby village of Jyura children, and was living with her mother-in-law. life through the teachings of Saint Rennyo. and she visited t - temple regularly.
Omoto. a jealous and ill-natured woman. tried to stop Kiyo fro visiting the temple.
Nevertheless. Kiyo made her way to the temple at night. On the night of March 20 in the fourth year of the Bunmei Era [147 ]. Omoto. anticipating
Kiyo's visit to the temple. put on a demon mask handed down from her ancestors.
She wore a white hemp garment, disheveled her white hair. and id behind the bushes
in Kotani along the path to Yoshizaki Temple. When Kiyo aproached. chanting a
prayer to Amitabha. a demon jumped out and blocked her path. T ough frightened by its
sudden appearance. Kiyo calmed herself and said. "If you want 0 bite, bite me. If you
want to eat, eat me. No matter what you do. you will never b- able to eat away my
unconquerable faith toward Amitabha." Continuing her cha t to Amitabha. she
quickly continued on her way to Yoshizaki. Omoto rushed back home and tried to take off the mask, onl to discover that she
could not remove it. Her limbs became numb and she could n- longer move. While
she was suffering. Kiyo arrived home. When Kiyo opened th door. she found the
demon she had encountered in Kotani. Kiyo was scared at firs but heard Omoto cry
out loudly and confess, "The demon was me." Omoto apologized t- Kiyo from the bottom
of her heart. Kiyo. by explaining the power of prayer and q oting Saint Rennyo's
teaching of salvation. suggested that she recite a prayer to A itabha. When Omoto
chanted "namu-ami-dabutsu." the mask came off by itself and the strength returned
to her limbs. Since then, Omoto began visiting Yoshizaki Temple and listen ng to the teachings of
Saint Rennyo. Both Kiyo and Omoto became faithful believer. The mask was given
