Mischelle Martis Assignment 3 MGT 559 SP2017 May 8, 2017 Introduction: Burger Boy is a fast food restaurant where the author Jerry Newman worked. He describes an incident on a rush day at Burger Boy where 2 out of 10 employees had called off sick and they were short staffed. (Newman J., Gerhart B., Milkovich G., 2017.) Therefore, to compensate for the missing employees, the assistant manager, Otis, had moved the employees from their regular positions. Marge, who works on the fries section was put into the drive-thru section. Newman was working as a cook by himself, and Chuck was going back and forth between drive-thru to help Marge and assist Lucy in assembling sandwiches. Also, later in the day, there is a big argument between Leon, the shift supervisor and Otis, the assistant store manager because one of the employees who is scheduled to leave at 2:30 PM, is not been replaced by another employee. According to the case, one can clearly assume that the stress levels are really high and all the employees are under pressure of being short staffed. (Newman J., Gerhart B., Milkovich G., 2017.) Analysis: Problems at Burger Boy: According to the case, it appears that there are several issues with Burger Boy. One of them being they do not have enough staff members to cover during rush hours or as back up during emergencies like people calling off sick. Another problem according to me is, the employees do not have clear job descriptions, and they are randomly moved to fill the gaps. Also, Newman is left by himself to handle cooking though he is a new chef with no experience.
