Julio Biel Jr. Experiment 17 Gen Chem Lab II Buffer Solutions Objective : To find the pK a of acetic acid by multiple methods and to determine if the acetic acid/ sodium acetate buffer solution can resist changes in pH. Independent Variable : the pH of the solutions Dependent Variable: the pK a of acetic acid. Hypothesis : . In this experiment using methods of titration with NaOH and acetic acid, we will find the pH of a buffer solution. The pK a of acetic acid will be found by measuring the pH of acetic acid, with a buffer solution being made with equal concentration of acetic acid and sodium acetate which will be the buffer solution. Then the pK a will be measured from the buffer solution and compared to the value found from the pH found in the first method and the percent difference will be found. Experimental Outline: 1. Make 150 mL of 0.1 M NaOH by adding 3 mL of 5 M NaOH in to 250 mL Erlenymeyer flask along with 147 mL of water.
