Describe proper handwashing technique. Medical asepsis and surgical asepsis is the most effective way to eliminate transmission of disease. Medical asepsis is the removal of pathogens to reduce transfer of microorganisms by cleaning any body part or surface that has been exposed to them. Surgical asepsis is the destruction of all microorganisms, pathogenic, and nonpathogenic, on an object or instrument. The first scrub of the day should be extensive lasting 2 to 4 minutes, unless the hands are excessively contaminated. A good antimicrobial soap with chlorhexidine is recommended.
