Class Notes – Race Consciousness 1. Race Consciousness a. The extent to which the individuals perceive differences in life chances in group rather than individual terms b. The extent to which individuals see their own position as being structural rather than personality determined c. The extent to which individuals see their group as hostile toward and dominated by members of another group 2. Racial Ideology a. System of beliefs that reinforce and reproduce assumptions about individuals belonging to a particular race group i. Everything you think of when you hear the word race b. Implicitly Evaluative i. You assign a good or bad feeling to the word 3. Racism is not… a. Racism is not bigotry or ethnocentrism i. You can be these things without being racist b. Racism is not the recognition of patterns in appearance and behavior among members of a group c. Racism is not disliking characteristics that are attributed to a particular group i. EX: I don't like that black people wear their pants baggy
