Before one can look at the variables that impact test design one must understand test reliability. Kubiszyn and Borich (2016) state, a test is reliable only if a student can take it more than once and receive near the same score (p 338). Teachers need to keep this in mind when designing a test. Test score reliability is directly affected by several elements including group variability, scoring reliability, test length, and item difficulty. Group variability is the affect different groups of students have on the test score reliability (Kubiszyn and Borich 2016 p 343). For example when there are several students who differ in learning ability, age, or other factors then there will be a higher reliability coefficient. Students who are around the same learning level will have a lower reliability coefficient.
