Crime prevention and deterrence through mass media has been used by law-enforcement and agencies for the last few years. Part of modern police work is developing more modern efforts to reduce crime and social disorder. Police Department’s that take this opportunity should consider advertising their positive work and ideas to society. Law-enforcement and agencies can make significance in removing crime opportunities by encouraging and teaching the public to have better self-protection measures. They can also warn criminals of increased police vigilance and improved tactics by police as it refers to deterrence. Also, publicity campaigns can offer departments another tool to better help them fight against crime. There are many ways that the public can learn about police and crime prevention. In the news, often times we see stories detailing the initiatives of law-enforcement agencies. We also see this in newspapers or editorials/ journals. Billboards on the high highway that say “click it or ticket” help to raise awareness to the general population about the important of buckling up. Another common way we hear about crime/ deterrence in the media is the word of mouth. I know this personally because my mother texts or tells me all the time about news stories she has seen when she watches the news. If anyone watches the news or has a smart phone then they are aware of what a lot of law-enforcement officers are doing that day to deter crime. Even getting an amber alert on your cell phone is a form of crime prevention and deterrence through mass media.
