Week Three Assignment(Question Answers)1The Opium wars represent a prime example of imperialism; a Western nation imposing its beliefs on another country. Upon the start of the 19thcentury, Britain and China had traded goods, however the Chinese would only allow certain products to be imported into their country (i.e. only payments in silver). The need for money in the 19thcentury caused England to become aggressive with deal trading; ultimately giving them power over India and negatively effecting the country. Due to large supplies of Opium possessed by the British (used as a painkiller), they needed to get rid of excess product and aimed to rid of it in China. China outlawed opiates, ultimately causing England to declare war. In the end, China was forced to open its borders to British trade. Leopold II founded the Congo Free State, a private enterprise that enabled him to hold claim of the Congo. The Congress of Berlin dealt with rights of ownership relating to Africa. The Spanish American war resulted in U.S.power over Latin and western pacific regions; ending colonization in these areas. This war also resulted in a peace treaty between America and the Spanish; causing the Spanish to relinquish ownership of Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S. This aided America due to its enabling the Country to allot dominance over the Caribbean area. This ideology enabled nations to intervene if a country appeared to be too powerful. This balance was implemented to maintain balance between various nations. The Crimean War of 1853-1856 resulted from military related conflict between the Russian Empire andthe nations of Sardinia, France, and Britain. Peace negotiations as well as a neutral respect of Ottoman Empire territory by the Great Powers practiced the balance of power. The Franco-Prussian War changed the balance of power in Europe by resulting in the unification of Germany and the elimination of French domination in Europe.
