Week 4-Discussion 1 Both President Kennedy and his successor President Johnson were both advocates for the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. Prior to his death President Kennedy wrote into law “The Civil Rights Act” of 1964. This law outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, when hiring, promoting, or firing employees, in public accommodations, and in all programs receiving federal funding (Barnes & Bowles, 2014). This law did a lot for the African American community. As a result of it passing through legislation; the law also supported prosecuting anyone committing civil rights violations in southern states. This law was a great start to help bridge the injustices perpetrated on African Americans; however this law did nothing to help blacks that wished to exercise their rights to vote. Therefore, in 1965 congress passed the Voting Rights Act and President Johnson signed it into law. This law gave jurisdiction over elections to the federal government and prevented southern jurisdictions from
