The mother chooses Maggie to have the quilt because she has a stronger relationship with her mother, she knows the history of the quilt, and she knows what its use for and its value.Over years Maggie stays with her mom and has helped her with the house. They have a very strong relationship. They bond and talk about everything. For example, the mother states in the beginning of the story , "I will wait for her in the yard that Maggie and I made so clean andwavy yesterday" (p. 1). Therefore, this scene shows how they do almost everything together. Which she does not have with Dee. When Dee leaves them, the mother is still imagining and hope to have a better relationship with Dee; in paragraph four she says “sometimes I dream a dream in which Dee and I are suddenly brought together…"(p.4). Even though she hopes for Dee, she knows that she and Maggie have that relationship where they can depend on each other.
