Bio 130 Study Guide, Exam 1 The exam will cover Chapters 3-6 and the sections of Chapter 10 covered in lecture. You are responsible for the lecture material, material in the book, and the lab material from the first two labs. There will be a few questions on material from the lab, including concepts and techniques. The test will be a combination of multiple choice, molecule and organelle identification, short answers and probably a few more challenging questions. The best ways to study for this exam (and in general) are: Review your lecture notes and read the book. Rewriting your lecture notes is an excellent learning tool. Form a study group. Working with others and explaining things to each other is one of the best ways to understand and retain the material. If you can really explain something, it means you truly understand the concepts. Do the assorted practice tests and quizzes at the end of each chapter and in the course website Study Questions- Note that these questions are not meant to be comprehensive and cover all the material on the test- they are meant as a study aid. 1. Be able to recognize the different types of functional groups. Know the properties of amino groups and carboxyl groups. 2. What are the biologically important macromolecules? How are they formed? What specific types of bonds does each have? Which ones are polymers and which ones are not? What are the monomers for each different type of polymer? 3. Be able to distinguish between starch and cellulose by looking at a drawing of each. Know why they have different structures and why starch is easily digested and cellulose is not. Be able to point out α and β linkages. 4. What are the three major types of lipids? Be able to recognize them; you will not need to give specific names, but you will need to give a general name (i.e. phospholipid). 5. Why are plant lipids likely to be fluid (oils) at room temperature while animal fats are typically solids?
