October 6, 2005 Sleep You only need to look at behavior while sleeping to study The EEG-10/20 system is an international system used to study sleeping persons When someone experiences amnesia, the concern is in the temporal lobes Seizures Can stimulate one with a flashing light Sleep study EOG – electrooculogram Is used for measuring muscle action potentials Measures the moving of the eye EMG – electromygogram REM sleep Brain is more active during REM sleep than any other time Body is paralyzed even though you have one pair of muscles that move uncontrollably Stages of sleep Varies across the population College students tend to go directly into REM sleep Stage W Not a true stage of sleep Defined by alpha waves Alpha: related to good things Major manipulation is closing of the eyes Stage 1 Light sleep If woken up, they will deny being asleep Stage 2 Very important diagnostically This is a transition stage from light sleep into very deep sleep Defined by the appearance of sleep spindles, or high voltage spikes, in the medial thalamus that attempt to kick start sleep
