Topic: The Rise of Zengi ( 1131 – 1146) A. The Succession of Baldwin II a. Baldwin II had died in 1131 b. He had no son i. Therefore, he married his daughter, Melisende, the lord Fulk of Anjou ii. King Fulk (1131-1143) took the royal title. However, it was shared jointly between him, his wife, and their 2 year old son, Baldwin iii. Fulk also inherited the regency of Antioch 1. It was necessary for Antioch to be under solid rule due to the growth of Zengi 2. Therefore, he married Bohemond’s daughter to “Raymond of Poiters” and he arrived there in 1136 B. The Rise of Zengi a. Atabeg of Mosul b. Took over Aleppo in 1128 c. Preached a jihad against the Christians i. Luckily, he was preoccupied with Muslim Damascus ii. King Fulk allied with Damascus to prevent Zengi from extending his power to the borders of the Latin Kingdom iii. Because of this alliance, Zengi turned his attention to Mesopotamia. iv.
