Steven Segal July  17     th    , 2008     TOPIC:  “THE IDEA OF A HOLY WAR” 1. The Origin of Holy Wars a. Began when Jews left Egypt and moved to Jerusalem, escaping slavery 2. The First Holy War a. The set-up:   Antiodus Epiphanes set-up an alter to Zeus in the Jew’s Jerusalem  in homes for Hellenization (making people more Greek) b. Judas Maccabaeus was the hero.  He is known as the first martyr, or someone  who is willing to die for their country/faith c. Christians of the Crusades saw themselves similar to the Maccabaeus and  harnessed the idea 3. Islam a. Islam founded as both a state and a religion i. Therefore, war was part of the Islamic foundation b. Founded by Mohammad i. Grew remarkably fast ii. After death, people thought allegiance was only to him 1. The Riddah Wars were fought after his death by the successors to  keep people faithful to Islam
